Your Computer - Is It Costing You Money?

Very few businesses are not ‘run on a computer’ - and by
definition all readers of this article are computer users.
However, how may business people can use their computer and
the relevant software competently? You bought your computer to
increase your efficiency, document quality, financial analysis,
etc. If these goals are not being properly met, then you are at a
disadvantage and it’s possibly even costing you money. In the
extreme it can damage your business. Here are a few examples of
how it can cost:
- Reading the Manual repeatedly, to find out how to do many,
even simple, things (time cost) - Asking someone how to do these
things (double time cost) - Corrupting your work, needing to
re-do it (time cost) - Formula errors in spreadsheets (direct
money cost) - An employee uses your Accounting software, but you
can’t (very dangerous) - ‘Lost’ files and emails (time cost)
- Difficulty finding things on the Internet (time cost)
- Unable to
make simple changes to your own web site (extra fees) - Don’t
know how to Back-Up properly (potential disaster) - Don’t
understand firewalls, malware, phishing and other Internet
nasties (potential time and money costs)
If you’re having difficulty, some training will more than
repay its cost in saved time, reduced hassles and a higher
quality output when using your computer. There are a number of
sources of short training courses:
- Software producers - many conduct their own training
courses. - Community Colleges (Adult Education Colleges) - all
offer training. - Technical Colleges also offer short training
courses. - Commercial computer training firms.
It’s necessary to be able to use a computer and relevant
software to gain the much trumpeted benefit of computers as time
saving and efficiency improving devices. After all, that’s why
you bought the contraption!
