Internet Marketing And List Building - The First Step

We have several different levels of reader here, people who know Internet marketing and list building and people who are brand new to even being online. My company did a survey recently, and found that what people want most is a step-by-step guide to help them learn to get their list building systems up and running. In this first article in a series, we’ll discuss the very first step, and it may not be what you think.

Or sure, people always think it’s buying a domain name, but that’s not true. The first step in list building is to decide what your niche will be. But let me give you a suggestion–stay away from the Internet marketing niche, at least for now. The competition is too huge, made up of Internet marketing experts, who know a lot more than you do. So, instead, choose something that you’re passionate about. It can be something you know about already or something that you want to know a lot more about. It can be a hobby, like quilting, or a your job, such as insurance. Whatever it is because it’s something that you’ll be interested in working with for a long time to come.

Next, go and see how many searches were done on your niche. Go to http://inventory.overture.com and plug in your keyword. If you find that the term had less than about 10,000 hits, then you may want to consider a different niche. It won’t be very lucrative, if nobody is looking for that information. If you find that you really want to work in a particular space, then brainstorm some new keywords for that niche. It’s possible that another keyword could have a higher search volume.

Avoid using very broad terms. Golf, for instance, had 625,160 searches in January 2007. People love golf! But when you see that many searches, it means that you have a very competitive market. In that case, look down the list to see if there are other terms that might work for you. Golf tip, golf game, and golf swing are all viable search terms. Write everything down and the number of searches that each word on the list receives.

But let’s say that you chose “golf swing.” It had 12,582 searches, and so, it’s a reasonable amount. If you can be list building around that niche, rather than the broad term of “golf,” you’ll probably do much better because there’s less competition. So, you try Internet marketing and list building in that niche. You might even do some teleseminars or webinars with golf pros who have a product and a list, and they’ll help you to be list building through the classic Internet marketing joint venture. Right?

Here’s the deal. Your niche has to be something that you’re interested in, and it has to be something that people are searching for. Internet marketing won’t work, if you’re trying to sell things to people who don’t want them. But when you have a niche that people are interested in, like “golf swing,” you’ll probably have a pretty good niche. But the next step is to brainstorm some domain names. Do that, until our next article, which will help you to buy one of the domain names on your list.
