Traditional Archery And Target Panic: A Widespread Problem?

Since curing my own target panic four years ago and creating a DVD called The Push Release that explains the cure, I’ve received many letters and testimonials from customers relating their own struggles with target panic and their success using the Push Release. Many had been battling target panic for a long time—one for as long as 20-years. It is satisfying that the DVD has helped so many and I’m happy with it’s success, but it really underscores how widespread the problem is.
I’ve heard estimates that say that 90% to 98% of all archers will suffer from target panic at some point in their shooting lives. I don’t know who comes up with these figures and they certainly seems high to me, but I know that there are a lot of archers with target panic out there.
Although the Push Release cure was created for traditional archers and finger shooters, I get inquiries from compound archers using mechanical releases desperate for a solution. Some say that the problem is more prevalent among compound shooters because they use sights, but I don’t think this is necessarily true. The burden of pulling 100% of the draw weight can aggravate and intensify any target panic related symptom. Being over bowed may even be a contributing cause—though not a major cause of target panic.
Strength training is an often overlooked element of good shooting. Spend six weeks on a solid strength training program and you will notice a big difference in your shooting. You will feel much more in control and confident, and may even stave off some minor target panic symptoms. Improved accuracy is another likely benefit. I advocate a once or twice per week program for all archers, regardless of whether they have target panic or not.
If you are a traditional archer and a sufferer of target panic, know that you are not alone. There are many others like you, including—at one time—myself. Strength training will definitely help, but in my biased opinion the best option is learning the Push Release.
