Do you have any idea of what it is like to be profoundly deaf, and suddenly hear again? This, in layman’s terms is exactly what happened to me.
Forty years ago, I couldn’t hear my little children properly. I first noticed I was hard of hearing when I didn’t seem to mind if they were noisy, but others did.
At that time, many hearing aids were sold by well meaning people with little or no professional training. One kind gentleman came to our home, did a little test and sold me a hearing aid. An impression of my ear canal was taken and shortly thereafter I was hearing a hearing aid in my right ear.

Have you heard some of the horror stories about wearing hearing aids. I hope that after reading this article, you will not be afraid. I was born with a severe hearing loss and started wearing one behind-the-ear hearing aid when I started Grade 5. I did so well that my parents got me a second hearing aid before starting Grade 6. Growing up with a hearing loss, I was painfully shy and very self-conscious of not hearing as well as my parents or friends. At that time, people either spoke to me funny by over-articulating their words. The other thing people did when I was younger; they ignored me and spoke to my parents about me. I became invisible to the family and friends that I grew up around.

At speaking engagements to consumers, one of my most commonly asked questions is “which brand of hearing aid is best?”
Most people asking that question are missing the most critical points.
There are several excellent brands, and yes, some are better than others, but most people focus so much on the features and advertising, that they overlook what’s really important.
Some of the best hearing aids in the world can provide horrible results. The key is not who made it, but who is chosen to select, fit, and adjust hearing aids.
