Writing articles for syndication is different from academic paper. For the latter, you need to write formally but this is a practice that you should stay away from if you are writing for less technical oriented market and outside of the academical environment.

If you are blogging or writing articles for casual web visitors, conversational tone is recommended for several reasons. First, people don’t read online, they keep scanning until they find something that is interesting for them. This means your writing should be easy to digest or otherwise they may not be able to grasp it quickly.

Writing conversationally have many benefits:

1. It conveys personality

Remember that people only do business with others who they know, like and trust. If you stick with corporate speak they may see it as a complex entity instead of a warm individual. This can be bad for your business.

Nowadays even Fortune 500 companies are blogging so one individual can represent the company in front of their readers, fans, prospects and customers.

2. It builds trust

Your readers will appreciate it if they know there is a real person behind the business. Especially online, people can’t see who is on the other side. Often trust was built without ever meeting the vendors or customers you’re interacting with.

By writing personally, it’s like chatting with the readers beside a warm fireplace. You talk to them as if you meet them face to face.

3. It is more compelling

Writing like you talk is more compelling to your reader. They are more likely to read through the end of the article when they find it interesting.

Of course, “writing like you talk” doesn’t mean that you must include all the “ah…” or “uhmmm….” all over the places. This may actually distract and make the article very amateurish. With a bit of editing, you should be able to turn the talk into conversational writing that flows very naturally. That’s your goal even if you’re writing from scratch or transcribing existing audio recording or interview sessions.
